NOT REALLY
why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the automation job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- AI voice platforms bundling telephony so builders never touch a raw communications API. OpenAI, October 1, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? paid only
- 3 replacements listed, all paid.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
Twilio turned telecom into an API call and became the default way software sends an SMS or answers a call. AI voice startups threaten to sit on top of it and own the customer, reducing Twilio to wholesale minutes. Its defence is regulatory and physical: carrier relationships, number provisioning, and compliance regimes like A2P registration are slow, unglamorous moats, and almost every AI voice agent still terminates its calls on infrastructure like Twilio's.
