Traefik
Cloud-native reverse proxy that configures itself from container and Kubernetes labels.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Kubernetes Gateway API standardising ingress and commoditising controller choice. Anthropic, November 4, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Caddy, NGINX and Envoy.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Traefik's trick is auto-configuration: it watches Docker or Kubernetes and wires up routes and TLS certificates as services appear, which removed most of the reason to hand-edit nginx configs. The Gateway API standard makes ingress controllers more interchangeable and therefore more replaceable. Traefik stays widely deployed because self-hosted and homelab setups adopted it as the default, and because agents that spin services up and down constantly need routing that reconfigures itself.
