The backstory
Scale AI built the human labelling machine that trained a generation of models, then moved up into evaluation and expert data for reinforcement learning. Meta's large investment in the company in 2025 rearranged the market overnight, since rival labs became reluctant to send sensitive training data to a supplier partly owned by a competitor. Synthetic data pressures the low end at the same time, leaving the specialist expert-annotation work as the durable core.
