Restate
Durable execution engine that makes ordinary functions resumable after a crash.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Cloud step-function services and Temporal owning the durable execution category. Anthropic, November 4, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Temporal and Hatchet.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Restate provides durable execution, a workflow that survives a process dying and resumes exactly where it stopped, in a single binary rather than a cluster. That primitive turned out to be the missing piece for AI agents, whose long-running, tool-calling, failure-prone loops are almost impossible to make reliable without it. Restate is smaller than Temporal and easier to adopt, and the agent boom created far more demand for durable workflows than existed when the category began.
