Redpanda
Kafka-compatible streaming platform written in C++ with no ZooKeeper or JVM.
why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Managed cloud queues and serverless event platforms absorbing streaming workloads. OpenAI, July 8, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Apache Kafka and NATS.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Redpanda is a drop-in Kafka replacement that removed the JVM and ZooKeeper, cutting both latency and the operational misery that made Kafka a specialist skill. Cloud-managed queues take the simple workloads, but real-time AI pipelines need exactly what Redpanda sells: high-throughput ordered streams feeding inference. Its agentic data plane work pushed it further into that lane, and Kafka wire compatibility means adopting it costs a config change rather than a rewrite.
