The backstory
Prefect's appeal is that it does not ask you to restructure your code: decorate a Python function and it becomes a retried, observable, scheduled task with a dashboard. That low adoption cost won it a lot of data teams who found Airflow's DAG ceremony exhausting. The category is being pressured by durable execution engines from the application side and by warehouse schedulers from below, and Prefect's answer has been to lean into orchestrating AI and agent workflows, which are Python-shaped by default.
