why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the design job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Hosted AI services removing any reason for a normal person to install a model locally. OpenAI, March 17, 2026 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Ollama, LM Studio and ComfyUI.

The backstory
Pinokio removes the single biggest barrier to local AI, which is that installing ComfyUI or a voice cloning tool means wrestling with Python environments and CUDA versions. It scripts all of that into a browser-like app where models install with a click. Hosted services are easier still for most people. The audience that stays is anyone who wants uncensored models, zero per-generation cost or genuine privacy, and the open-model wave keeps that audience growing.
