Parallel
Web research API built for AI agents rather than human readers.
why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the search job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Model providers bundling web search into their APIs at no extra charge. OpenAI, February 10, 2026 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Tavily and Firecrawl.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
Parallel, founded by a former Twitter chief executive, sells search designed for machines: deep research runs that crawl, read and return structured, cited answers rather than a list of blue links an agent has to parse. Model vendors bundle basic search, which caps the shallow end. The distinction that matters is depth and provenance, since an agent making a decision needs sources it can show, and the vendors' bundled search is optimised for a chat answer rather than an audit trail.
