The backstory
Paperpile manages papers from Chrome and inserts formatted citations straight into Google Docs, which made it the default for researchers living in Google's stack. Gemini now sits inside Docs and will read attached PDFs, answer about them and draft around them, eating the lightweight end of the workflow. Paperpile is wounded but not gone: assistants still cannot guarantee correct reference formatting or maintain a shared lab library.
