why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the search job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked

- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Typesense and ClickHouse.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
OpenSearch exists because Elastic changed its licence, and AWS forked the last Apache-licensed release rather than lose the workload. It has since become a credible independent project under the Linux Foundation, covering logs, search and vectors in one engine. Specialist vector databases win new AI projects on ergonomics, but OpenSearch holds an enormous base of log and observability deployments where adding vector search to an existing cluster beats adopting anything new.
