why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the AI assistants job, so this one is still worth keeping open.

The backstory
OpenClaw, created by PSPDFKit founder Peter Steinberger and formerly known as Clawdbot and Moltbot, became the fastest-spreading open-source AI project of early 2026 by inverting the assistant model: instead of a chat window in someone else's cloud, you run it on your own machine, connect your own accounts and message it on an app you already use. It writes its own skills as code when it hits something it cannot do, and keeps long-term memory locally. Hosted assistants are more polished, but they will not give anyone root on their own data, which is the entire point here.
