why this verdict
Keep paying — Microsoft has not replaced it
Microsoft's version overlaps, but does not finish the notes & knowledge job, so this one still earns its $15/mo.

The backstory
Notability is a handwriting-first note app for iPad with pencil input and recorded-audio sync to notes. AI assistants summarize and generate typed notes, but they do not replace stylus handwriting, sketching and lecture-audio capture on a tablet. The pen-and-tablet workflow and Apple-ecosystem fit are the moat. Because its core interaction is physical, not text generation, Notability survives.
