NOT REALLY
why this verdict
Keep paying — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $19/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Agents create and destroy databases faster than humans ever did. Anthropic, January 1, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Supabase and Turso.
- What the call is worth $228/yr

The backstory
Neon's branching turned out to be perfectly shaped for the agent era: an AI builder can spin up a throwaway database per preview, per PR, per generated app, and pay nothing when it idles. That is why so much of its growth came from platforms provisioning databases on users' behalf.
