The backstory
n8n is open-source workflow automation, a visual canvas for connecting APIs and services, that leaned hard into AI agents. With MCP and agentic tool use, assistants can now call APIs directly without glue code, which sounds like n8n's death. Instead it survived by shipping native AI-agent nodes and, crucially, by being self-hostable: teams get full control, data privacy and the ability to run complex, reliable workflows on their own infrastructure. A chatbot can improvise a call; n8n runs the durable, auditable pipeline around it.
