why this verdict
Keep paying — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the data & BI job, so this one still earns its $25/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Warehouse vendors bundling free natural-language querying into products teams already own. Anthropic, July 8, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 1 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: DuckDB.

The backstory
MotherDuck's insight is that most analytics datasets are far smaller than warehouse pricing assumes, so DuckDB on a laptop plus a little cloud is enough. Text-to-SQL is now free everywhere, which removes an argument for any warehouse UI. That helps more than it hurts here: when a model writes the SQL, query volume climbs and per-query warehouse billing gets painful, which is precisely the bill MotherDuck undercuts. It also shipped its own prompt-to-SQL layer rather than let a rival own that surface.
