Mockoon
Open-source desktop app and CLI for spinning up local mock REST APIs in seconds.
why this verdict
Cancel it — switch to MSW
MSW and WireMock now cover the same core job, so there is little reason to run a second tool for it.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Agents scaffolding a throwaway mock server in code faster than one can be configured. Anthropic, February 24, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers all of it editorial call
- The whole core job — the thing the subscription was actually for.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: MSW, WireMock and Beeceptor.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
Mockoon let you click together a fake API with routes, latency and templated responses so front-end work could continue before the backend existed. Configuring it was faster than writing a mock server by hand, which was the entire pitch. An agent now writes a small Express or Hono server with the endpoints and sample payloads you described in less time than opening the app. The tool is still free and works well, but nobody needs the GUI any more.
