LanceDB
Embedded vector database built on the Lance columnar format, running in-process.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Managed vector services and pgvector covering the retrieval use case without a new format. Anthropic, April 16, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Chroma, pgvector and Qdrant.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
LanceDB took the SQLite path through the vector database wars: no server, no cluster, just a fast columnar format you open as a file and query in-process. That is a strong fit for agent workloads, local-first apps and multimodal data where a network hop per lookup is intolerable. It avoids the fight that wounded the server-based vector stores, because it is not asking anyone to run new infrastructure, and it stayed relevant as AI training pipelines adopted Lance for storing large multimodal datasets.
