Kong
High-performance API gateway and service connectivity platform, open source at the core.
why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Service meshes and cloud-native ingress absorbing the traffic-management layer. OpenAI, November 4, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Traefik, Tyk and Envoy.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel

The backstory
Kong is the default open-source API gateway, sitting in front of a substantial share of enterprise internal traffic with plugins for auth, rate limiting and observability. Cloud ingress and service meshes keep absorbing parts of its job. Kong's counter was to become the control point for AI traffic specifically, adding an AI gateway that routes between model providers, enforces token budgets and caches responses, turning the same architectural position into a new product on a much faster-growing workload.
