why this verdict
Keep paying — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $250/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Coding agents writing notification fan-out logic that a dedicated service used to justify. Anthropic, November 4, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.

- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes

The backstory
Knock handles the part of notifications nobody wants to build twice: routing one event to email, push, Slack and in-app, honouring quiet hours, batching digests and storing per-user preferences. An agent can write the fan-out, but preference management and delivery observability are stateful services rather than code. As AI agents start generating events on their own schedule rather than a human's, controlling notification volume becomes the product, which is the thing Knock is actually selling.
