The auction is the product; AI just bids into it.

The backstory
Google Ads is the auction that sells access to Google's search and display inventory, the single largest pool of high-intent attention online. AI creative and campaign automation, including Google's own Performance Max, now handles targeting and creative automatically. That makes ad agencies nervous, not Google: the model automates bidding into the auction, but it cannot replace the inventory or the auction itself. Google owns the demand and the supply, so it survives its own automation.
