The backstory
Copilot popularized inline code completion. Agentic tools like Claude Code changed the game from "complete this line" to "implement this feature" — pressuring the value of pure autocomplete. But Copilot survived by absorbing the shift: it added chat, agents, and multi-model support, and its deep GitHub/IDE integration is hard to dislodge.
