The backstory
Gauth, from ByteDance, built a large student audience by letting someone photograph a problem and get worked steps back, combining AI with human tutors for harder questions. The entire premise was arbitrage on capability that is now free: every phone assistant reads a photographed problem and explains it, with better reasoning and no subscription. Homework help apps were among the first casualties of multimodal models, and this category has not recovered.
