The backstory
Excalidraw is a free, open-source whiteboard famous for its hand-drawn look, used to sketch diagrams and architecture fast. Text-to-diagram AI threatened tools that charged for diagramming, but Excalidraw absorbed the threat by making AI just another feature (text-to-diagram inside the canvas) while staying free and beloved for its aesthetic. Since there is no subscription wall to undercut and the charm is the point, it survived comfortably.
