C
Cube
Semantic layer that defines metrics once and serves them to every downstream tool.
NOT REALLY
why this verdict
Keep it — OpenAI has not replaced it
OpenAI's version overlaps, but does not finish the data & BI job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Text-to-SQL letting anyone query the warehouse directly with no semantic layer in between. OpenAI, July 8, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? paid only
- 3 replacements listed, all paid.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Cube exists so that revenue means the same thing in the dashboard, the API and the spreadsheet, by defining metrics once in a governed layer above the warehouse. Text-to-SQL looks like it makes this unnecessary, since anyone can just ask. It makes it essential instead: a model asked to compute revenue will confidently invent a definition, and a semantic layer is the only thing that constrains it to the company's real one. Cube repositioned around exactly that argument.
