Convex
A reactive backend where the database, functions and types are one system.
NOT REALLY
why this verdict
Keep paying — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one still earns its $25/mo.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- AI codegen favours backends with strict, checkable types. Anthropic, January 1, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 2 of 2 listed replacements have a usable free tier: Supabase and Firebase.
- What the call is worth $300/yr

The backstory
Convex made an argument that got much stronger with AI: if the backend is fully typed and reactive, a model's generated code either compiles and works or fails loudly. Vagueness is what makes agents dangerous, and a schema-enforced backend removes a lot of it.
