why this verdict
Keep it for the workflow, not the AI
Redpanda and Apache Kafka cover the headline feature free, and the workflow around it is why you would still open this.

The backstory
Confluent commercialised Kafka and built the connector and stream-processing ecosystem around it, which for years made it the safe enterprise choice for event streaming. It is caught between Redpanda and object-storage-backed engines undercutting it on cost, and cloud providers bundling adequate queues for free. Real-time AI feature pipelines are genuine demand and Confluent is well placed to serve them, but the pricing pressure is severe enough that the growth story now has to be told carefully.
