The backstory
Codeium (now Windsurf) offered free AI code completion and chat inside your editor, undercutting paid rivals. But the frontier moved from autocomplete to full agentic coding, where a model plans and edits across a whole repo. GitHub Copilot also added a free tier, erasing the price advantage. It's wounded because plain completion is now table stakes; the company had to pivot into an agentic IDE to stay relevant as the value shifts from suggesting the next line to writing the whole feature.
