The backstory
CapCut is a free, surprisingly full-featured video editor, strongest on mobile and beloved by short-form creators for auto-captions, effects and templates. Native AI editing features are appearing everywhere, but CapCut already ships its own and gives away the whole editor for free. Being owned by ByteDance ties it tightly into the TikTok creation loop. It survived because free, powerful and mobile-first is a hard combination to undercut, and it's adding AI rather than fighting it.
