Biome
Rust-based formatter and linter for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON and CSS in a single fast binary.
why this verdict
Keep it — Anthropic has not replaced it
Anthropic's version overlaps, but does not finish the dev tools job, so this one is still worth keeping open.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- Agents fixing style and lint issues as they write, softening the need for a linter. Anthropic, February 24, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers not the job editorial call
- Parts of it. The job still needs the tool to get finished.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: ESLint, Oxlint and Prettier.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Biome replaces a Prettier and ESLint setup with one Rust binary that formats and lints in a fraction of the time. Agents write reasonably tidy code and will fix lint errors when asked, which reduces the human nagging a linter used to do. That misses the point of CI. When a large share of commits is machine-written, a deterministic, fast, non-negotiable gate matters more, and speed is exactly what Biome sells.
