Apollo GraphQL
GraphQL federation, gateway and client tooling for composing many services into one API.
why this verdict
Keep it for the workflow, not the AI
tRPC and GraphQL Yoga cover the headline feature free, and the workflow around it is why you would still open this.
- A named launch, not a vibe named, unlinked
- AI-generated typed clients making GraphQL's flexible-query advantage less compelling. Anthropic, May 22, 2025 — no announcement link recorded yet.
- How much of the job it covers headline only editorial call
- The headline feature, but not the workflow, data or integrations around it.
- Is there a free way to do it? yes
- 3 of 3 listed replacements have a usable free tier: tRPC, GraphQL Yoga and Hono.
- What the call is worth nothing to cancel
- No paid entry tier tracked, so there is no subscription to cancel.

The backstory
Apollo built the commercial layer around GraphQL: a federated gateway, schema registry and the client library most front ends used. GraphQL's core pitch was letting clients ask for exactly the fields they need instead of waiting on a backend team, and that scarcity has eased now that a typed REST endpoint can be generated on request. Apollo's federation still solves a real problem at large organisations with many teams, but greenfield projects increasingly skip GraphQL entirely.
